This week I joined up with Bexar Audubon Society to participate in a bird survey of one of San Antonio’s municipal golf courses, Willow Creek.

Fellow pop music enthusiasts, I love birds, like a LOT. I photograph them and record them with embarrassingly-long microphones.
The first time I listened to Out of My Head by Charli XCX my bird senses lit up as I picked up on a bird screaming in the backing track. It might sound like noise to most, but I was SURE it was a certain local bird I heard all the time when birding.
Today’s magical moment arrived with a loud tap, tap, tap, tap.
The moment I heard the noise, I looked straight up at it. That unmistakable drilling sound permeated the air as it jammed its beaks into a tree trunk.
I’ve been recording at Medina River Natural Area on the weekends for the past few months. It is a nice place to record due to its distance away from highways once you get deeper into the natural area.

Birdwatching this morning was special because it was my first opportunity to try out my new microphone and it brought a cute new recording subject.
My Bird Buddy smart bird feeder arrived a few weeks ago and I was excited to install and fill it along with my other feeders. It took about ten days for the birds to start regularly returning to my yard. A few more days after that, I had my first brave visitor to the new feeder!
Since 2014, I have been blogging about birds and the hobby of birdwatching on Because Birds. It started as a Tumblr blog that blew up in popularity. I used Tumblr to share cute and funny bird photos, videos, and memes.
Once I outgrew Tumblr, I created a full WordPress website and began writing guides, reviews, birding summaries, and other experiences.
I’ve had great this domain for a few years now and previously forwarded it to my main birdwatching website, Because Birds.
I’ve wanted to do something with it for a while and today was the day! This is the Birding Blog, a place where I’ll share my birding experiences big and small, both at home and around the world.
